Chapter 605 - 606: Proposal
Chapter 605 - 606: Proposal
As the car sped away, the wind brushing against her face, she clenched her fists tightly. "What’s wrong with that man...?" she muttered under her breath.
.....
Over the next few days, their paths kept crossing.
Coincidences piled up: unexpected encounters in streets and brief moments where their eyes met before Lucas walked away as if she didn’t exist.
At first, he ignored it, assuming she would eventually give up.
But she didn’t.
And one day, she finally cornered him.
That day, Lucas had come for a site inspection.
As soon as Lucas stepped out of the car, adjusting his cufflinks with a calm, indifferent expression, he noticed a familiar figure standing near the entrance.
Kayla was already there.
The moment her eyes landed on him, she straightened, her grip tightening around something in her hand.
Then, without hesitation, she jogged toward him, her steps quick and determined.
"Lucas!" she called out, slightly out of breath as she reached him.
Before he could even react, she pulled out a neatly folded letter and held it out toward him.
Lucas frowned, his brows knitting together as he looked at the paper but made no move to take it. "What is this?"
Kayla’s expression turned unexpectedly sincere. Her usual sharpness softened, replaced by a nervous yet resolute gaze.
"I... I’ve started to like you," she said, her voice steady despite the faint tremor beneath it. "I want to date you."
She extended the letter further, her hand trembling ever so slightly, yet her eyes held a kind of forced bravery.
The surrounding workers and passersby, drawn by the sudden tension, began to gather.
"A proposal?" someone murmured.
Soon, the crowd grew, and voices began to rise.
"Say yes!"
"Come on, accept it!"
The chanting grew louder, almost playful, yet suffocating in its pressure.
Lucas let out a low chuckle, the sound devoid of warmth. He looked at Kayla, his gaze sharp and distant, and asked, "Do I know you?"
The words fell like a sudden silence.
The crowd froze, their excitement instantly replaced by confusion.
’Wait... what?’
A delivery girl proposing to a complete stranger?
Kayla blinked for a moment, then forced out a small laugh, trying to smooth over the awkwardness.
"What are you saying? We’ve been meeting for the past few days. Doesn’t that count for something? At least... coincidence?"
Her words were carefully twisted, enough to mislead those listening.
Murmurs spread again.
"Oh... so they’ve met before?"
"Maybe they’ve been seeing each other?"
Suspicion and curiosity filled the air as people began looking at Lucas differently.
Lucas’ expression darkened slightly. "If someone heard you without context," he said coldly, "they might think we’ve been on dates."
He took a step forward, his voice calm yet cutting. "In reality, you’ve been deliberately creating these so-called ’coincidental’ meetings."
The crowd fell silent again, this time heavier, more judgmental.
Kayla’s smile stiffened, but Lucas didn’t give her a chance to recover.
"Not to mention," he continued, his gaze unwavering, "what surprises me the most is that someone with such a terrible personality thinks she’s worthy of proposing to anyone."
A ripple of shock passed through the crowd.
Kayla’s expression changed instantly. Her eyes flickered with calculation as she seized the opportunity.
"So that’s how it is?" she said, her tone rising slightly. "You’re looking down on me because I’m a commoner, aren’t you?"
Her voice carried just enough hurt to sound convincing.
"If people find out about this," she added, "do you think your reputation will survive if I ask them to boycott you?"
A few onlookers exchanged uneasy glances.
Lucas’ eyes turned colder. "Not once did I say I despise your background," he replied firmly. "I despise your personality."
The murmurs grew louder again.
Lucas exhaled slowly, realizing the situation was slipping into dangerous territory. He turned toward the crowd, his voice steady and authoritative. "Since you’re all here, you can judge for yourselves."
He gestured lightly toward Kayla.
"A woman I barely know comes and proposes to me in public. When I refuse, she uses her status to pressure me into accepting. Tell me...how does that make any sense?"
He paused briefly before adding, "And most importantly... I’m already engaged."
The words struck like thunder. The crowd erupted into whispers.
"He’s engaged?"
"Then what is she doing?"
All eyes turned toward Kayla, their expressions now filled with disapproval.
Kayla stood frozen, her face paling. ’Engaged...?’
She hadn’t expected that. Not at all.
A flicker of embarrassment crossed her face, followed by a forced cough as she tried to regain composure. "I... I see," she muttered softly. "In that case, I won’t disturb you anymore."
Her tone turned shy, almost fragile, as she lowered her gaze and quickly ran off.
As she disappeared, the crowd gradually lost interest and began to disperse.
A few people lingered, shaking their heads. "You should be careful around people like her," one of them advised Lucas. "They tend to cause trouble."
Lucas gave a faint nod. "I understand."
At that moment, he didn’t think much of it.
But soon enough, those words would prove true.
........
A few days later, Lucas was at a high-end hotel for a business meeting.
Conversations murmured quietly in the background as he concluded his meeting and stepped out.
Just as he walked toward the exit... a figure suddenly stumbled into him.
Before he could react, Kayla threw herself forward.
Lucas instinctively stepped aside, but she grabbed onto his arm tightly, her fingers digging into his sleeve as she used him to support herself.
"Help me..." she whispered weakly.
Her voice was trembling, her breathing uneven.
Lucas’ eyes narrowed as he looked at her closely. Her face was flushed, her movements unstable, and her gaze unfocused.
’...She’s been drugged.’
Without hesitation, he called his driver. "Bring the car around. Now."
Within moments, they were inside the vehicle. Lucas made sure she was placed in the front passenger seat while he sat in the back, maintaining a clear distance.
Kayla, however, grew increasingly restless.
Her hands trembled as she struggled against herself, her breathing turning ragged. She reached back toward him, her voice breaking, "I... I can’t... bear it... please..."
Tears streamed down her face as she tried to unbuckle herself, attempting to move toward him.
Lucas frowned deeply, his expression hardening.
’This is getting out of control.’
Without another thought, he leaned forward and struck the back of her neck, knocking her unconscious.
Silence fell in the car, broken only by the faint hum of the engine.
Soon, they arrived at the hospital.
Lucas didn’t step out. Instead, he instructed his driver to handle everything, from admission to formalities.
As soon as it was done, he left.
When he arrived at Jules’ place, the tension he had been holding finally cracked.
The moment he saw her, he stepped forward and pulled her into a tight embrace. "I’m exhausted..." he muttered, his voice low and drained.
Jules gently held him, her brows furrowing with concern. "What happened?"
Lucas sighed and recounted everything, the repeated encounters, the confrontation, and the incident at the hotel.
As she listened, her expression softened, her hand gently patting his back. "If this continues," she said quietly, "you should file a complaint against her. Make sure she can’t approach you anymore."
Lucas gave a small nod. "You’re right."
Even he had begun to feel that things were getting out of hand.
’Why does it feel like trouble is following me everywhere...?’
While he was busy, Theodore too encountered a problem.
Chloe.
She was an actress he had previously worked with, their film having turned into a success. The public had started pairing them together, fueling rumors and expectations.
Recently, she had approached him with a proposal.
"Let’s get married for a year," she had said with a confident smile. "We can act like a perfect couple. Once we gain more fame and freedom, we’ll separate."
Theodore had rejected her immediately.
"I already have a girlfriend," he said firmly. "I won’t agree to something like that."
Who would have thought that Chloe would continue pushing things this far, even when she clearly understood the dilemma she was creating?
Sometimes, she would even hint during interviews, her tone playful yet suggestive, as if there were something more between them.
Meanwhile, Theodore sat in his room.
’Why is this happening to me...?’
Compared to his other siblings, who were constantly dealing with the eerie presence of those mysterious institute figures, Theodore’s problem felt almost absurd. He wasn’t being haunted by someone with a system.
He was being haunted by real people.
And worse... people who idolized him.
Chloe’s intentions weren’t hard to read. Theodore had recently gained immense popularity, his fame rising like a blazing fire, and she wanted to ride that wave. On top of that, he was young, talented, and undeniably handsome.
’Of course someone like her would get ideas...’
The thought made his chest tighten with irritation.
At one point, he finally snapped.
Grabbing his phone, his voice cold and sharp, he said, "If you continue pushing this narrative, I won’t hesitate to publicly deny everything and show my disapproval on social media."
