Chapter 435 - 433: Looking Quite Pitiful
Chapter 435 - 433: Looking Quite Pitiful
From his arrival to his departure, no more than ten minutes passed in total. Xu Su even felt that he had made a special trip just to see her, to check if she had recovered from her dejection the day before.
’What a warm person.’
Xu Su mentally gave him her stamp of approval: very handsome, a pretty nice guy, and self-respecting—an exceptionally high-quality man.
’This is the kind of guy I should set my best friends up with.’
The moment Si Xuan left, Huang Feng zipped over from the cash register like a little bee, shaking Xu Su’s shoulders and squealing, "Susu! Where on earth do you keep finding so many handsome guys! Where did this Si Xuan just pop out from?!"
"Let go, let go." The shaking was making her dizzy, and Xu Su hurriedly steadied herself. "He’s that Sect Leader from the elite group. He’s also a student at University B. I think he’ll be a junior or a senior in the fall."
Huang Feng had known for a while that she played online games—Xu Su had even gotten her to play for a couple of days. Hearing this, her eyes went wide. "What kind of insane luck is that? Bumping into a guy that handsome just by playing an online game."
Qian Jia came looking for Huang Feng after work. As soon as she walked in, she saw her two best friends whispering furtively in a corner. When she got closer and heard them say "handsome man," she couldn’t help but chime in, "What handsome man? Where?"
"You’re too late; the food’s already gotten cold."
Huang Feng linked arms with Qian Jia and, employing the exaggerated rhetoric of a liberal arts major, described Si Xuan’s good looks in such epic terms they could move heaven and earth—a true work of art by the gods.
Xu Su’s eyes widened as she listened, and she seriously began to doubt if the person Huang Feng was describing even existed in this world.
’Si Xuan is handsome, but not so handsome there’s no one else like him in the world, right?’
’Leaving aside everyone else, Zhou Mochen alone could give him a run for his money.’
Qian Jia obviously didn’t believe her either. Her eyes filled with suspicion, she said, "Who are you kidding?"
Huang Feng said, "...Fine, don’t believe me. But that Si Xuan really is handsome."
Qian Jia asked, "Is he more handsome than Zhou Mochen?"
Hearing her boyfriend’s name, Xu Su let out a little "ah?" and looked up in confusion. "Since when did Zhou Mochen become the benchmark for handsomeness?"
"What can we do? Among all the guys we know, your boyfriend is the most handsome,"
Qian Jia’s expression turned serious. "It’s not just his face. His whole aura tells you he’s not some ordinary person. And then there’s that Shen Chen. He may look easygoing, but I always get the feeling he’s not someone you want to mess with."
And just like that, the conversation turned to Shen Chen again.
Xu Su’s smile slowly faded. She sighed and said, "Come on, let’s go get something to eat. I’m leaving for my trip tomorrow, and I won’t be back for at least a month."
Huang Feng and the others already knew she was going on a trip to the Tibetan Area.
For dinner, they went to the same restaurant Zhou Mochen had taken them to before.
With no men around, the three girls felt free to talk about anything and everything.
Huang Feng and Qian Jia started by talking about things that had happened at work recently. After sharing a few bizarre experiences, the topic drifted over to Xu Su.
Compared to their own simple, dull daily routines, Xu Su’s life was more exciting than an idol drama. As her best friends, it went without saying just how interested Huang Feng and Qian Jia were.
The entire evening, the conversation moved from Xi Zirong to Zhou Mochen, and then to Si Xuan, who had shown up that afternoon.
Huang Feng interrogated her like a criminal, determined to get to the bottom of everything. Xi Zirong wasn’t a big deal; he was in the past, after all, and they already knew everything there was to know. The main subject of interest was Si Xuan.
When she heard that Si Xuan would also be leaving with Xu Su on the trip tomorrow, Huang Feng gave a wicked laugh. "Susu, is your boyfriend really okay with this? He’s letting you go on a trip by yourself?"
"What’s there to worry about?" Xu Su glanced at her. "There are more than ten of us going. It’s not like we’ll be in any danger."
’She completely missed my point.’
Huang Feng cleared her throat. "What I mean is, with your knack for attracting admirers, isn’t Zhou Mochen worried you’ll go on a trip and come back with a few new love rivals for him?"
"What admirers am I attracting?" Xu Su said, exasperated. "Don’t you dare blame me..."
At this point, the conversation finally turned to Shen Chen.
"The day before yesterday, the three of us were supposed to hang out, right? But then you stood me and Jiajia up. Since you didn’t come, we didn’t go out either. We just canceled our day off and went back to work. We never expected Shen Chen to come looking for us that afternoon."
Huang Feng said, "I was in the middle of my shift when he suddenly showed up at the bubble tea shop. He came right up and asked if I could get in touch with you. And the look on his face... tsk..."
Words failed her for a moment. "He looked like he’d lost his most precious treasure. So lost and dejected. He was actually kind of pitiful to look at."
Xu Su: "..."
’Pitiful, my ass!’
Speaking of Shen Chen, even Qian Jia chimed in. "Last time at the bar, I felt like the way that Shen Chen looked at you was... off. A bit like God Xi back in the day, you know? Anyway, it wasn’t innocent."
Xu Su: "..."
’So, even Qian Jia could tell...?’
’How dense could I be!’
Seeing that Xu Su didn’t look surprised, Huang Feng couldn’t hold back any longer. "Susu, you knew all along that Shen Chen likes you?"
"No, no," Xu Su was completely exasperated. "I only just found out in the last couple of days. If I’d known earlier, I never would have gotten so close to him."
The mere mention of Shen Chen made her think of what he did yesterday, and Xu Su’s rare, relaxed mood was uncontrollably soured.
Huang Feng and Qian Jia exchanged a look, sensing Xu Su’s irritation.
Qian Jia asked, "Does your Zhou Mochen know about this?"
"Mhm..." Xu Su nodded, taking a sip of her sparkling water. "They got into a fight yesterday. Shen Chen’s still laid up in the hospital."
"Holy shit!" Huang Feng exclaimed. "Like, brothers turning against each other? They didn’t hurt you, did they?"
Qian Jia’s eyes widened even further as she stared at her.
’They didn’t hurt you, did they...’
A warmth spread through Xu Su’s heart. She held her glass and smiled at them. "Look at me. Do I look hurt?"
Huang Feng had previously expressed that she had a bit of a crush on Shen Chen—the kind of crush where you see someone through your own special filter.
So much so that on her way over, Xu Su had been secretly worrying that Huang Feng might feel upset about Shen Chen liking her instead.
Sure enough, a true best friend was a true best friend. Huang Feng’s first reaction was still to worry about whether she’d gotten caught in the crossfire between two grown men fighting.
Huang Feng said, "For a while there, I thought Shen Chen was pretty gentle. Looking at it now, he likes you, so he was probably only gentle *with you*."
She remembered the incident she’d stumbled upon in the bar’s restroom last time. Those two girls were from the music academy, and so pretty, too. But in the end...
In any case, ever since that incident completely shattered her worldview, Huang Feng no longer had any of her initial naive ideas about Shen Chen and his circle.
’These rich people all seem so high and mighty. The life that ordinary people strive for is something they’re born with. So, they only ever want things that are more thrilling, things that push past the boundaries of morality.’
’Ordinary people and ordinary things would hardly make them look twice, right...?’
’Even major celebrities have to bow and scrape before them, don’t they?’
Huang Feng had even secretly worried that one day, Xu Su would be treated the same way as those two girls...
