Chapter 294 - 228: The Real and Fake Wen Ranchen (Part 1)
After giving birth, Shen Jingxian really didn’t have much to deal with.
After more than a month of good rest in bed, Shen Jingxian began to reappear in everyone’s sight.
The morning court was moved to the afternoon; now it’s no longer called morning court, but evening court.
What Shen Jingxian does is sleep until she naturally wakes up and then attend court, receiving the ministers’ extravagant praises.
Sometimes their praises are too ridiculous, leaving Shen Jingxian too lazy to speak in court.
After all, the real matters are handled by Wen Ranchen and Song Yan, and she thinks being a mascot isn’t such a bad role.
The most she worries about daily is what position to lie in today.
However, the dragon throne is quite hard and cold on the behind, she needs to find a way to subtly add a cushion.
The first word the little one learned to call was "Mother", reportedly thanks to Wen Ranchen’s constant repetition in front of the daughter.
Everyday, Shen Jingxian performs acts of laziness and idleness in front of her child, and though worried her daughter might become just as idle, she grows even more tense about her act.
Luckily, Xiao Shen Jun is educated well by Wen Ranchen, inheriting none of Shen Jingxian’s slacker spirit, and under her father’s day and night influence, learned to command her mother to get up early at a young age.
When Xiao Shen Jun was five, she was already mature enough to handle some greeting memorials on behalf of her old mother, though how Wen Ranchen taught her remains unknown.
In Xiao Shen Jun’s sixth year, a rebellion broke out in the north, carried out by remnants of the previous dynasty, yet it was quickly suppressed despite its small scale. Wen Ranchen insisted on going over personally to confirm some matters.
The trip took over a month.
Truth be told, Shen Jingxian hadn’t particularly noticed Wen Ranchen even when he was around all the time, yet his sudden departure for more than a month did feel strange.
When Wen Ranchen was brought back by his men, he was covered in blood and seemed frightening, yet he himself was unconscious.
At the sight of Wen Ranchen, Shen Jingxian’s pupils constrict abruptly, and in her eyes, apart from Wen Ranchen himself, nobody should be capable of inflicting such grievous wounds on him.
But now, why?
The Imperial Physician arrived quickly, but found no wounds on Wen Ranchen’s body during examination, and the blood seemed only to exist on his clothes.
It seemed a misunderstanding, yet Shen Jingxian breathed a sigh of relief.
Once composed, Shen Jingxian questioned the general who brought Wen Ranchen back.
As it turned out, Wen Ranchen suddenly disappeared not far from the capital, prompting immediate search efforts. When found, he was lying on the ground surrounded by blood, sparking fears of delaying treatment, hence hurriedly bringing him back to the palace without verifying whose blood it was.
Shen Jingxian gestured for them to leave, planning to wait for Wen Ranchen to wake up before addressing anything further.
She sat by the bedside accompanying Wen Ranchen, reflecting on how he had always seemed omnipotent to her, yet in truth, was just flesh and blood.
Shen Jingxian reached out her hand to caress Wen Ranchen’s brow and eyes.
Hmm, truly handsome.
If only he’d wake up faster.
Perhaps Shen Jingxian’s prayers were effective, as Wen Ranchen furrowed his brows and suddenly opened his eyes, gripping Shen Jingxian’s hand tightly, rendering it immobile.
"Ow! Wen Ranchen, what’s wrong with you! It’s me, let go!"
Shen Jingxian had never realized Wen Ranchen was so strong, as she felt her wrist bones were about to break.
Only then did Wen Ranchen return to his senses. He stared at Shen Jingxian; ambiguous emotions flowed through his dark eyes until assured she was truly there, he released his grip.
"Apologies, I thought it was someone else," Wen Ranchen’s voice was noticeably colder than usual, as if some warmth was absent.
Shen Jingxian’s hand was hurting, however, and she didn’t notice this.
Shen Jingxian alone brooded briefly, realizing Wen Ranchen not only didn’t attempt to console her, but didn’t show concern for her like before, disrupting her mood.
Yet considering Wen Ranchen might still be unclear-minded freshly waking up, Shen Jingxian forgave him inwardly, deciding to give him another chance!
"What happened? Vice General Zhang and others said you disappeared suddenly and were found covered in blood."
Wen Ranchen passively surveyed his surroundings, confirmed he was in the Imperial Palace, then slowly lowered his gaze, "Can’t recall."
In truth, he remembered.
He remembered personally unravelling Yunyi Country, compelling his father to witness the ruin of the landscape he resolutely protected, then commit suicide before him.
He also remembered how he had killed himself.
But why was he alive now?
And Shen Jingxian, a princess meant to be pierced by a thousand arrows as a pawn, why was she at his side now?
"Can’t remember? Let it be, as long as you’re alright. I told you not to go, but you insisted..."
Wen Ranchen silently listened to Shen Jingxian’s nagging without interjecting but continually extracted information.
This princess differed from his memory; the one he recalled always exhibited caution toward him, as though he were a delicate porcelain doll, while this one... was noticeably more natural.
Even somewhat domineering.
"Seeing that you just came back today, I won’t ask you to help with the memorials, get some rest."
Wen Ranchen almost imperceptibly nodded, inner thoughts unsettled.
Memorials? Does he help with memorials?
This world seems unlike the world he knew.
Though it doesn’t matter, Wen Ranchen was uninterested in anything now, those were merely instinctive musings earlier.
Shen Jingxian quickly processed memorials, simultaneously venting to Wen Ranchen how recent greeting notes have gotten more absurd.
"Minister Qian’s wife keeps trying to send things to the palace every time, fearing we’re lacking food here."
"And this old Ma, I merely praised how delicious pecan was last time, and now he writes about it in submissions daily, it’s giving me a headache."
"Husband, why aren’t you speaking? Are you feeling unwell?" Shen Jingxian realized Wen Ranchen hadn’t responded despite her monologue, which was unlike him, prompting her to lift her gaze and find Wen Ranchen staring intently at her.
Yet that gaze... was somewhat discomforting.
Unsure if she imagined it, Shen Jingxian felt Wen Ranchen seemed cold toward her today, wondering if she was caught doing something wrong.
No, surely not.
Wen Ranchen was shocked by being called "husband"; they had indeed married?
Song Yan didn’t hinder it...
Wen Ranchen knew Song Yan’s feelings for him, which he couldn’t reciprocate, only arranging for her a better life after her usefulness wore out.
Now being wed to the princess must mean... in this world, Song Yan lost?
Seeing Wen Ranchen merely watching her without speaking, Shen Jingxian suddenly comprehended something.
She moved forward to hug Wen Ranchen’s waist, "So it’s just because the night before you left I didn’t let you hold me, I’m letting you hold me now, happy now? Don’t sulk anymore."
